A Mother's Instinct

There are many times in my new found motherhood that I feel like I have absolutely no idea what I am doing and I often just make an educated guess (and sometimes not even an educated one). But today I experienced what I can only chalk up to a mother’s instinct.
I was wrapping up a gift for a baby shower luncheon that we will be attending and I carelessly put the cardboard wrapping paper tube on the floor as I finished up the wrapping. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Lucas playing with the tube but I didn’t think anything of it. After I finished wrapping the gift I noticed that the tube was all wet and realized that Lucas had been chewing on it. (No surprise there).
When I looked over at Lucas he was moving his mouth in such a way that it seemed like he had a piece of the cardboard and was trying to swallow it. My baby cpr lessons from years ago came to mind and I used my finger to sweep his mouth which he did NOT like and kept on trying to bite down on my finger. At that moment I realized that the cardboard either needs to go down or come out so I gave him his sippy cup and he started drinking away. A few big gulps of water and a choke/cough and out came a huge chunk of cardboard and a lot of water. As gross as it was, at that moment, I could not have been more thankful for spit up.

Lucas probably thought it was gluten free pizza crust. It tastes like cardboard. I’m glad you didn’t choke.
